August's Top Stories

Back to school, cooler weather and domain name conference season...

But before that, August was a news-making month for the domain name industry, in particular the .xyz domain name.

I wrote multiple stories on some of the hotter topics, so I've grouped these together on the list.

1. Google is now part of Alphabet, uses ABC.xyz. This surprise announcement lifted awareness of all new top level domains.

2. Verisign v. XYZ - It was a busy month for the false advertising case Verisign brought against .XYZ. Verisign is asking for documents from a number of third parties about its conversations with .XYZ and Daniel Negari. Donuts said Verisign is trying to intimidate and bully competitors. And based on exhibit lists, Verisign seems to be zeroing in on .XYZ's deal with domain name registrar Network Solutions.

3. Paul Graham: Change your name. Get the .Com - Y Combinator co-founder explains why you need a good name and the matching .com domain name.

4. Google Domains screw-up divulges 1,664 customers' email addresses - someone on the Google Domains team forgot to bcc: an email, sending it to 1,664 Google Domains customers. Oops. On the positive side, there was none of the usual "reply all" complaining.

5. .Online domain name registrations by the numbers - a look at the makeup of .Online's record-breaking launch.
