ICANN Announces Conclusion of New gTLD Initial Evaluations [PR]

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 01:02 PM PDT

Major Milestone Reached in New Domain Program

Los Angeles, California ICANN's Generic Domains Division announced today the conclusion of the Initial Evaluation (IE) phase of the new generic Top-Level Domains (gTLD) program. More than 1,700 applications have now moved to the next steps in the program.

"This is an extraordinary landmark which demonstrates the progress in this program," said Akram Atallah, President of ICANN's Generic Domains Division. “We are looking forward to the innovations that these new introductions will enable on the Internet.”

Out of the 1,930 new gTLD applications submitted, a total of 1,745 applications passed Initial Evaluation, 32 have gone into Extended Evaluation, and 121 were withdrawn from the program.

"It would be an understatement to say we are excited to reach this point," said Christine Willett, Vice President of gTLD Operations. “Applicants worked hard on their applications and the evaluations were complex and rigorous. We are pleased that 90% of the original applications passed Initial Evaluation – this is a clear and distinct success.”

Applications that passed IE will proceed through the program based on their complexity. Some may move straight to the Transition to Delegation phase, while others may have to go through additional steps, such as dispute resolution and string contention.

As another indicator of the progression of the New gTLD Program, 12 additional registry agreements have just been signed, 11 of which are the first English character TLDs. The contracts govern the registry and administration of a dozen new gTLD's.

ICANN's new gTLD program is the result of 8-years of study, 47 public comment periods, which produced over 2,400 comments, 55 explanatory memoranda and 7 versions of the new gTLD Applicant guidebook.

Welcome to the DomainNameWire.com newsletter.

New top level domain names are coming. Although
just a handful are likely to hit the web this year,
2014 should see hundreds of them.

Are these domains destined to fail in the face of
massive competition? How much demand is there?

A lot of people think they know the answer, but what's
happening next year is entirely unprecedented.

Applicants have a wide range of registration goals
for their domain names.

Today I profiled Daniel Negari, who thinks he can
score a million .xyz registrations in a year and
5 million within three years.

http://domainnamewire.net/click.html?x=a62b&lc=BeOam&mc=B1&s=V0alB&y=0&

Public Interest Registry, the group that manages
.org, wants to get 1 million registrations of its
planned .ngo domain. It doesn't give a timeline.

Afilias' has forecast between 5,000 and 51,000
domains under management for each of its new TLDs
after three years.

As some readers have pointed out, noting these numbers
in the company's applications may play to the company's
benefit. So they might be sandbagged. That said, the
numbers might not be far off for some of the strings.

Of course, volume isn't the only measure of a TLD's success.
.Co has managed to get a very respectable 1.5 million
domains under management. This, by itself, is a good number.
It's even more impressive because it charges a premium price
for the domains.

Also, some community targeted domains will purposefully
limit the number of registrations by limiting the
purchase pool.

Most applicants are staying mum about their registration
goals, at least until they win the string.

Only time will tell which new TLD operators have made
the right projections.

Huffington Post on the Importance of the URL & Domain Name and Direct Navigation Traffic

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 11:00 AM PDT

In an article that was published by the Huffington Post Canada last week, the founder and CEO of  RIWI Corporation talks about the importance of the browser URL bar and Direct Navigation. RIWI is a data analytics company

Citing a number of different sources, the article concludes that Direct Navigation is a continuous traffic that also helps the connection with the brand and create trust.

Two data points from the article that I hadn’t heard of before:

In 2010, Google was cited (notably in research by Amy Langville of the Mathematics Department of Charleston College) saying that 15 per cent of Web users use the URL bar to reach ads/buying decisions as opposed to hyperlinks. Note: this is not a statistic of the per centage of people who use the URL bar vs. search but rather a per centage of those who simply reach their ad destination via the URL bar as opposed to hitting on an ad hyperlink. Actual use of the URL bar thus has to be higher than 15 per cent if that Google figure is right.

Web and tablet access to sites is rising dramatically. Many mobile users prefer direct navigation URL bar search to searching in Google or Bing or other search sites. The reason is this: the URL is bigger and mobile phone displays are rising. Comparing across categories, (study by Marketing Land, 2012), the results are clear:

Travel:
Direct navigation: 43 per cent
Search engine: 24 per cent
Autos:
Direct navigation: 46 per cent
Search engine: 37 per cent
Restaurants:
Direct navigation: 44 per cent
Search engine: 33 per cent

New gTLD applicant Radix launches Photo Contest for Registrars

Radix Registrar Contest

It appears that the registry operators for new gTLDs have started the courting for registrars with some marketing efforts. DirectI’s Radix registry has launched a photo contest for registrars to find the best pictures representing one of their 29 new gTLD applications. The twist? The photos are to be shot with a Polaroid camera that will be provided to the registrar teams by the registry. The winning registrar will receive $1,000 USD for a day out/party. Registrars have to submit their photos by September 10, 2013.
