Welcome to the DomainNameWire.com newsletter.

The new top level domain name program offers several ways for
companies and people to object to a particular application.

One of these is a "Legal Rights Objection", which is administered
by World Intellectual Property Organization.

Companies filed 69 of these objections, and so far we have the
results from 16 of them. In each case, the objector lost.

Most of the cases decided so far have been fairly simple. They were
often filed by another applicant for the same string. In some cases
they tried to game the system by applying for or acquiring a
questionable trademark for the term. That's the case with .home:

Another common type of case is where a company uses a common word
as its brand. Fashion companies Express and The Limited objected
to applications for .express and .limited, respectively, that Donuts
applied for. Both lost:

Coach objected to Donuts' .coach application. The objection is
still pending.

Many of the objections are to common dictionary terms. The USPS
objected to all applications for .mail. It was a very strange move.

So far one of the .mail objections has been denied. Given how thin
the USPS' argument was, I expect all of its objections to be declined:

names and the objections process.

Lean Domain Search acquired by Automattic (WordPress)

Posted: 15 Jul 2013 01:25 PM PDT

As reported by The Next Web, Automattic, the company that runs WordPress has acquired Lean Domain Search. The founder of the site, Matt Mazur, will continue to work for WordPress.com working on domain name related features. Automattic became an ICANN accredited registrar in 2010, but is currently still selling domain names through a partner registrar (as far as I can tell). Lean Domain Search was first introduced on HackerNews in the beginning of 2012. The service was originally launched as Domain Pigeon in 2009. In between the service was run as a freemium solution, but the site was switched back to being free in May of this year.

According to an Interview published by Domain Name Wire, Matt Mazur had been approached by Matt Mullenweg about working for Automattic earlier, but wasn’t able to do so at the time. He recently revisited the idea and Automattic was still interested in hiring him.

TechCrunch also covered the purchase and here’s Matt Masur’s post about the deal, The purchase price was not revealed.

The Internet Architecture Board considers Dotless Domains Harmful

Posted: 11 Jul 2013 08:44 AM PDT

The Internet Architecture Board (IAB), which is a committee of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) issued a statement today that it considers Dotless domains, such as the proposed “SEARCH” by Google harmful and will not work together with currently used procedures. As the statement explains:

Unfortunately, dotless domains will not work as intended by TLD operators in the vast majority of cases. As recommended by IETF standards track RFCs, existing deployed systems apply a search list to single-label names prior to attempting to resolve them. As a result, the resolution of dotless domains depends on local configuration such as the search list. For example, in a location where "example.com" is included within the search list, the URL http://printer1/ will generate a query for "printer1.example.com", whereas in a location where "example.net" is in the search list, it will generate a query for "printer1.example.net".

Aside from the Google proposal for its application for ‘SEARCH’, apparently this practice currently is already used by some existing Top Level Domains according to the statement.

With this background the IAB issues the following recommendations:

  1. The IAB strongly recommends against considering, implementing, or deploying dotless domains.
  2. The IAB believes that dotless domains are inherently harmful to Internet security.
  3. Applications and platforms that apply a suffix search list to a single-label name are in conformance with IETF standards track RFCs. Furthermore, applications and platforms that do not query DNS for a TLD are in conformance with IETF standards track recommendations intended to minimize security vulnerabilities and reduce load on the root servers.
