Welcome to the DomainNameWire.com newsletter.

The new top level domain name program offers several ways for
companies and people to object to a particular application.

One of these is a "Legal Rights Objection", which is administered
by World Intellectual Property Organization.

Companies filed 69 of these objections, and so far we have the
results from 16 of them. In each case, the objector lost.

Most of the cases decided so far have been fairly simple. They were
often filed by another applicant for the same string. In some cases
they tried to game the system by applying for or acquiring a
questionable trademark for the term. That's the case with .home:

Another common type of case is where a company uses a common word
as its brand. Fashion companies Express and The Limited objected
to applications for .express and .limited, respectively, that Donuts
applied for. Both lost:

Coach objected to Donuts' .coach application. The objection is
still pending.

Many of the objections are to common dictionary terms. The USPS
objected to all applications for .mail. It was a very strange move.

So far one of the .mail objections has been denied. Given how thin
the USPS' argument was, I expect all of its objections to be declined:

names and the objections process.
