Welcome to the DomainNameWire.com newsletter.

As the year comes to a close, many in the domain
industry are looking forward to 2014.

2014 is sure to be a big year for the domain industry
thanks to the introduction of new top level domain
names.

Could it also be a big year for domain name parking?

Can a business that has suffered a dreadful decline
over the past five years finally perk up?

Frank Schilling, who owns several hundred thousand
domain names and his own parking company, thinks so.

I'd say it's possible that the decline will stop, and
also possible there's a small rebound.

Part of the reason is that Google, by far the largest
provider of parked domain ads, took the better part of
2013 to clean house.

It made it harder to scam the parking channel. It also
took lots of control away from the parking companies.

Making it harder to scam was great news to legitimate operators.
Taking control away from the parking companies, on the other
hand, resulted in a revenue drop.

Yet keep in mind Google's goal: make sure the domain
channel provides value to advertisers and thus continues
to be a going concern.

As advertisers come to appreciate the domain channel's
quality, it's possible we'll see some lift.

Will domain parking have a big year? I doubt it. Could
the downward pressure finally abate?

I hope so. But I've learned to not hold my breath.

-Andrew

Welcome to the DomainNameWire.com newsletter.

The face of domain name conferences appears to be shifting
for next year.

The conference circuit typically kicks off with DomainSponsors'
WebFest (formerly DomainFest) in Santa Monica in late January
or early February.

But not next year. Although DomainSponsor executives
swear the show will go on in 2014, it will take place later
in the year.

Into the void goes NamesCon, organized by domain name investor
Richard Lau. NamesCon will take place in Las Vegas January 13-15.

I previously wrote 7 reasons why I'm going to the conference:

Word is that over 300 people are already registered for NamesCon.

Then in May, another new domain name conference will be held in Vegas.

Troy Rushton of Protrada is holding the similarly-named DomainsCon.

Word is this conference is more geared to educating newbies about
domain name investments.

If you're up for Vegas three times, you're in luck.

Rick Schwartz's TRAFFIC will return to Vegas for the second
year in a row May 28-31.

In the fall TRAFFIC will return to South Florida for a second show.

ICANN will hold its standard three meetings next year as well.

First up is Singapore in March. That will be followed by
London in June and Los Angeles in October.

Altogether it makes for a busy travel schedule for those
in the domain name business who find each type of conference
a necessary trip.
