Welcome to the DomainNameWire.com newsletter.

This year's Domain Name Wire Survey attracted over 500
domain investors and service providers.

Although I'm still releasing results from the survey,
here's a look at the results so far. The one big change
from previous years is in the domain parking category:

Uniregistry prepares for new gTLDs, sets up new retail registrar: Uniregistrar

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 05:54 PM PST

Frank Schilling’s new gTLD play Uniregistry becomes ICANN accredited and launches their retail registrar, Uniregistrar.

Uniregistrar completed their accreditation earlier this month. The name and site clearly identifies it as being associated with Frank Schilling’s Uniregistry that is applying for 54 new gTLDs.

The new site states:

Uniregistrar is a new ICANN accredited registrar designed to let you create domain names in the new top level domain extensions offered by Uniregistry.

Beginning in 2014 anyone will be able to create and manage their domain names using the simple site we plan to create here. The names offered by Uniregistrar will be shorter, clearer, easier to use and manage than the .com .net or .org names you know from the past.

We think you’re going to like the names we have to offer and we look forward to serving you. Check back with us later this year as a new site gets created at this location.

With this move the registry operator and new gTLD applicant is one of the first of the new entries that is making it clear that they will be operating their own retail registrar.

“Vertical Integration” (registries that own/operate registrars) has been a long and ongoing issue at ICANN, but in late 2010 the board decided that registries are indeed allowed to own registrars. One of the other applicants, Demand Media, recently increased the reach of their retail channel recently by buying the retail registrar name.com.

RIP Igal Lichtman aka Mrs. Jello

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 07:09 PM PST

According to Larry Fischer at DirectNavigation.com, a well known domain space veteran has passed away.  Igal Lichtman was a very successful business man and domain name investor.   Many will remember him from forums and from his whois where he left his mark as Mrs. Jello.  He had an inspiring portfolio with many gems such as grass.com, heartattack.com, fireplace.com and more.  He was involved in launching two parking companies (domainspa.com and trafficmedia.com), advertising companies and even a geo site at Jerusalem.com.  He was also a very successful entrepreneur in the software business in the 90s. His work in the software industry can be found at wikipedia.

I’m sure there is much more to Igal on a personal level, but it’s a sobering reminder that one day we all expire.
RIP Igal and may your domains auto-renew forever.

If you’d like to know more about Lichtman, he was covered recently in a DNJournal story.

Domain,

Welcome to the DomainNameWire.com newsletter.

Last night American Airlines and US Airways announced plans
to merge.

Although talks had already been going on for a little while, it
was obvious that merger discussions were serious when US
Airways registered domains related to a combined airline --
all the way back in March 2012:

This is just one example of when a company's business plans
were tipped off from domain registrations.

Domain registrations tipped me off that Amazon was getting into
the R&D supply business a month before it was announced:

If you were paying close attention, you might have learned ahead
of time what Abbott Labs planned to call its spin-off:

Speaking of Amazon, its Quidsi subsidiary often buys premium
domains ahead of store launches:

Domain registrations don't just tip off business plans.

Consider X Factor 2, and how it registered the names of many of
its finalists before the current season even started airing:

Although companies do what they can to hide these registrations, I do
my best sleuthing to catch them.

Court dismisses IOD’s .WEB lawsuit against ICANN

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 06:02 PM PST

As tweeted by George Kirikos, the court granted ICANN’s motion to dismiss Image Online Design’s (IOD) .WEB lawsuit. ICANN posted the “Order Granting ICANN’s Motion to Dismiss Complaint” (PDF) today on their site.

IOD had applied to operate the .WEB gTLD in 2000, but ICANN did not select the TLD for the phase at the time.
