March was a busier-than-usual month on Domain Name Wire with about 140,000 page views.

A lot of the traffic was because of the implosion of domain name registrar Alpnames, which suddenly stopped working. ICANN is transitioning customers' domains to Moniker.

It's been a while since we've had a fairly large registrar suddenly go dark. There were some warning signs on this one. My suggestion to people when selecting a domain name registrar is to consider if they trust the people running it. Don't know who is running your registrar? It might be time to move your domains.

Here are top stories on DNW last month, as ranked by pageviews:

1. ICANN shuts down Alpnames domain name registrar - ICANN terminated Alpnames after it stopped functioning. Moniker is taking over its domains.

2. Cumberland.com domain name sells for $250,000 - Patience paid off for Shane Kinsch, who sold the domain after hand-registering it in 2000.

3. Some recent domain name observations - A four-letter, three-hyphen domain name and two .church domains in the wild.

4. The Mastermind created his own domain registrar to run his criminal enterprise - Paul Le Roux created an ICANN-accredited registrar to run his online pharma network so that his domains wouldn't be suspended.

5. Tim Berners-Lee sighs every time you sell a domain name - On the 30th anniversary of the WWW, Tim Berners-Lee talks about domain investors.
