Frank Schilling’s Uniregistry is set to expand and plans open new offices in Newport Beach, California in January 2014. The building, which was purchased by the company is located at 2161 San Joaquin Hills Road and will house the company’s registry support, engineering and sales staff.

Schilling described the location as follows in an email to Domain Name News:

I bought the building and we are remodeling as we speak. We plan to move in this January. We have 68 parking spots so lots of room to grow. The building is  400 yards from Whole foods and Fashion Island, the best (highest end) outdoor mall in America. First four new gTLDs in the Root Zone

Posted: 23 Oct 2013 12:25 PM PDT

The first four new gTLDs of this latest round have just been added to the root zone, even though the IANA database has not yet been updated.

The four strings delegated are:

  • شبكة  (xn--ngbc5azd) –Arabic for “web/network”, Registry: International Domain Registry Pty. Ltd.
  • онлайн (xn--80asehdb) – Cyrillic for “online”, Registry: CORE Association
  • сайт (xn--80aswg) – Cyrillic for “site”, Registry: CORE Association
  • 游戏(xn--unup4y) – Chinese for “game(s)”, Registry: Spring Fields, LLC

The delegation doesn’t mean that those names are available for registration at this point, as the registry operators have yet to announce their sunrise launch phase where trademark holders can registrar domain names.

Internet Domain Name Expansion Now Underway

First New Generic Top-Level Domains Delegated

Los Angeles, California… The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) today announced that the first new generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) from its New gTLD Program were delegated. This means they were introduced into the Internet’s Root Zone, the central authoritative database for the Internet’s Domain Name System.

As a result, the domain name Registries, the organizations approved to operate these and other soon-to-be-delegated gTLDs, can execute the final processes required to make their domain names available to Internet users.

ICANN's New gTLD Program is responsible for the introductions of new gTLDs that will result in the expansion of the Domain Name System from 22 gTLDs (e.g., .COM, .NET, .ORG) to possibly 1,400 new names or "strings." These additional gTLDs will enhance competition, innovation and choice in the Domain Name space, providing a wider variety of organizations, communities and brands new ways to communicate with their audiences. All Registries that operate these new gTLDs must pass a rigorous evaluation process and technical preparations and assessments. These steps help ensure the safe, secure and measured rollout of the new gTLDs.

"It's happening – the biggest change to the Internet since its inception," said Akram Atallah, president of ICANN's Generic Domains Division. "In the weeks and months ahead, we will see new domain names coming online from all corners of the world, bringing people, communities and businesses together in ways we never imagined. It's this type of innovation that will continue to drive our global society."

The four strings delegated are:

  • شبكة  (xn--ngbc5azd) –Arabic for “web/network”

Registry: International Domain Registry Pty. Ltd.

  • онлайн (xn--80asehdb) – Cyrillic for “online”

Registry: CORE Association

  • сайт (xn--80aswg) – Cyrillic for “site”

Registry: CORE Association

  • 游戏(xn--unup4y) – Chinese for “game(s)”

Registry: Spring Fields, LLC

The newly delegated gTLDs are in Arabic, Chinese and Cyrillic scripts. They are the first of many gTLDs in various non-Latin scripts such as Arabic, Chinese, Greek and Hindi that will be introduced under the New gTLD Program. The delegation of non-Latin script gTLDs demonstrates ICANN's efforts to create a globally-inclusive Internet, regardless of language or region.

Before the general public will be able to access these new gTLDs on the Internet, Registries still need to complete a final process built into the New gTLD Program to protect trademark rights holders. Following this mandatory 30-day period, a Registry can make the new gTLD available to the general public at its discretion.

"Our efforts to ensure the secure and stable introduction of these new gTLDs is unparalleled," said Christine Willett, Vice President, gTLD Operations at ICANN. "In addition to applauding the applicants that have successfully completed the New gTLD Program, we also want to recognize the diligent work of our partners, the ICANN community and our own ICANN team. Together we have made an historic change in Internet address names."

ICANN's New gTLD Program was designed to facilitate a measured rollout of new domains so as not to disrupt the Domain Name System. The gTLDs from the New gTLD Program will be introduced into the Internet securely and steadily over the next few years. The Program is the result of eight years of study, and 47 different solicitations of comments from the public, which produced more than 2,400 comments, 55 explanatory memoranda and seven versions of the New gTLD Applicant Guidebook.

BREAKING: New domain name event, Namescon to be held in Vegas, January 13-15th, 2014

Posted: 18 Oct 2013 02:04 AM PDT

A new domain name conference, NamesCon, will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada from January 13th to 15th, 2014.  Well-known industry veteran, Richard Lau is the founder of the event and he has tapped Jodi Chamberlain from 32Events, to help coordinate.  Both Lau and Chamberlain are no strangers to domain events.  Lau has been involved in organizing several exclusive domainer get-together events in both Seattle and Las Vegas as well as the popular Water School “Water Night” fund raising events. Chamberlain has worked on a number of events and conferences, including some T.R.A.F.F.I.C. conferences and Domaining Spain.

Wherefore art though, WebFest (formerly known as DOMAINfest)
While the industry has become accustomed to Oversee.net announcing their Webfest / DomainFest conference in the 11th hour leading up to the T.R.A.F.F.I.C. conference, there have been no formal announcements so far this year. With the departure of organizer Aaron Kvitek earlier this year, rumors about the future of the event have been circulating. The official answer DNN received from a Oversee.net spokesperson is that there will be “a DomainFest/Webfest during the first half of 2014.” More details are to be expected in the “coming months”.

Good Timing
The January dates of Namescon fill the void left by DomainFest, but Lau tells us that the date and venue were also selected because of the close timing of another popular event Affiliate Summit West 2014 (aff).  The dates of the Namescon show around Affiliate Summit gives domain professionals another reason to venture to Las Vegas, but also has the potential to expose Affiliate Summit attendees to the domain space.  Lau told DNN, “NamesCon is the natural evolution of smaller, more intimate events I have been involved with in Las Vegas over the past 5 years. We are expecting that this will be THE networking event of the West Coast for early 2014.

The website for the event which just went up today (still obviously a work in progress) promises:

There is no channel like the domain name channel, and 2014 is an amazing year of expansion, growth, and change. This means opportunity – if you know the way through the maze to the cheese.

Come and meet some of the “who’s who” players in the internet naming space. We mean “alpha dogs”.

Speaker currently listed on the conference page include:

  • James Morfopoulos (Director of DomainTools Inc, COO of Ocean Networks)
  • Richard Lau
  • Patrick Carleton
  • Jothan Frakes
  • Paul Nicks (Go Daddy)
  • Adam Dicker (DNForum/TheArtOfTheName)

The event kicks off with a cocktail party on January 13th and will last the full day on January 14th/15th. The venue for the event still has to be confirmed.
