Welcome to the DomainNameWire.com newsletter.

New top level domain names are coming. Although
just a handful are likely to hit the web this year,
2014 should see hundreds of them.

Are these domains destined to fail in the face of
massive competition? How much demand is there?

A lot of people think they know the answer, but what's
happening next year is entirely unprecedented.

Applicants have a wide range of registration goals
for their domain names.

Today I profiled Daniel Negari, who thinks he can
score a million .xyz registrations in a year and
5 million within three years.

Public Interest Registry, the group that manages
.org, wants to get 1 million registrations of its
planned .ngo domain. It doesn't give a timeline.

Afilias' has forecast between 5,000 and 51,000
domains under management for each of its new TLDs
after three years.

As some readers have pointed out, noting these numbers
in the company's applications may play to the company's
benefit. So they might be sandbagged. That said, the
numbers might not be far off for some of the strings.

Of course, volume isn't the only measure of a TLD's success.
.Co has managed to get a very respectable 1.5 million
domains under management. This, by itself, is a good number.
It's even more impressive because it charges a premium price
for the domains.

Also, some community targeted domains will purposefully
limit the number of registrations by limiting the
purchase pool.

Most applicants are staying mum about their registration
goals, at least until they win the string.

Only time will tell which new TLD operators have made
the right projections.
