Welcome to the DomainNameWire.com newsletter.
If the designers of the domain name system knew then what we
know now, they would have done a lot of things differently.
One of these things would be a different design for Whois.
Yesterday, an expert working group released a provacative report
about what the directory for domain name registrants could look
like in the future.
http://domainnamewire.net/click.html?x=a62b&lc=BvFCg&mc=BF&s=V0alB&y=t&
Is the era of unrestricted access to Whois over? What does this
mean for domain registrars and domain investors?
It could mean a lot.
For registrars, the burden of managing Whois is already shifting
a bit with thick whois, which will be expanded with new TLDs.
Domain investors have a lot to lose in a Whois system change.
Restricted access to whois could hamper the domain aftermarket.
Fortunately, the working group has considered use cases in which
domain investors access Whois. This could actually be a win for
domain investors, as more historical information may be available
in a WHOWAS system.
I urge all members of the domain ecosystem to pay close attention to
the initial report. A comment period is now open:
