Welcome to the DomainNameWire.com newsletter.
If the designers of the domain name system knew then what we
know now, they would have done a lot of things differently.
One of these things would be a different design for Whois.
Yesterday, an expert working group released a provacative report
about what the directory for domain name registrants could look
like in the future.
http://domainnamewire.net/click.html?x=a62b&lc=BvFCg&mc=BF&s=V0alB&y=t&
Is the era of unrestricted access to Whois over? What does this
mean for domain registrars and domain investors?
It could mean a lot.
For registrars, the burden of managing Whois is already shifting
a bit with thick whois, which will be expanded with new TLDs.
Domain investors have a lot to lose in a Whois system change.
Restricted access to whois could hamper the domain aftermarket.
Fortunately, the working group has considered use cases in which
domain investors access Whois. This could actually be a win for
domain investors, as more historical information may be available
in a WHOWAS system.
I urge all members of the domain ecosystem to pay close attention to
the initial report. A comment period is now open:

Domain Name News: “.IO Domains Offline?”
Domain Name News: “.IO Domains Offline?” |
Posted: 07 Jun 2013 06:50 AM PDT As reported on twitter and Hacker News, .IO domains have stopped resolving and apparently new registrations are not going through either. .IO is the ccTLD for the British Indian Ocean territory. The TLD is especially popular with startups. According to comments on the post, 5 of 7 nameservers are returning NXDOMAIN (=domain does not exist) for queries for IO domains.
