Welcome to the DomainNameWire.com newsletter.

On Tuesday Microsoft announced its new video game system called
XBox One.

Moments after the announcement, cybersquatters went to their
favorite registrars to start registering related domains.

And they did it in great numbers.

More than 1,000 .com domains related to the XBox were registered
on Tuesday. They range from general terms to names of games that
will be released on the system.

A company that sells modified game controllers registered 13 domains
including "XBox One" or "XBox 1" and controller terms.

Someone even registered XBoxOneHacked.com. That will certainly
happen some day.

What can a company like Microsoft do to protect itself?

Well, Microsoft itself registered hundreds of domains as a defensive
measure.

It's also filing UDRPs. One registrar reports it has already received
a UDRP notification on an XBox One domain.

But there are so many possible permutations of domains that it's
impossible (and unwise) to defensively register them all.

The frivolity of fully protecting against cybersquatting in this
case will remain when new TLDs are released. Some might argue
that a new TLD will mean Microsoft wouldn't have to worry about
cybersquatters.

Microsoft has, after all, applied for .xbox.

But note how the company owns XBox.com, and cybersquatting is
still occurring on hundreds of second level .com domains even though
the logical site to learn more about the system is XBox.com.

Even when it owns .xbox, cybersquatting and need for defensive
registrations will continue.
