I've recently read a couple stories suggesting that the
.com base is falling off a cliff.

So I ran the numbers and found that it's simply not the case.

What I found is that some of the confusion about
.com growth rates has to do with varying data sources.

If you don't compare apples to apples, you may draw the
wrong conclusions.

The total base of .com domain names is still growing at
better than an 8% clip per year. But the growth rate
is slowing slightly. Very slightly.

And the absolute number of domains added has to increase
to maintain the same growth rate as the total base gets bigger.

That's not to say things won't change going forward.

There are two factors that could change .com's long
range growth forecasts.

First, the bigger .com gets the harder it is to sustain
the growth.

Second, new top level domains could offer alternatives
that sap some of the growth.

I don't necessarily agree with the latter, but that's
part of the idea behind new TLDs.
