Parent company of popular .CO domain wants 13 new gTLDs added to it’s portfolio

Posted: 12 Jun 2012 07:38 PM PDT

Miami based STRAAT, an investment company run by entrepreneurs and internet geeks, has announced that it wants to add 13 more new domain extensions to it’s portfolio. STRAAT is the parent company of .CO Internet, the registry operator of the .CO domain name extension, which has over 1.3M registrations from individuals and companies in over 200 countries worldwide.

STRAAT and its partners have committed the resources and capital to successfully acquire and launch the following 13 gTLDs: .APP, .BOOK, .CORP, .DESIGN, .GMBH, .GROUP, .INC, .LAW, .LLC, .LTD, .MOVIE, .TECH and .WEB.

STRAAT hopes to acquire all 13 of these gTLDs outright, but it anticipates an orderly and rapid resolution of contested strings, without the need for a formal auction. Jose Ignacio Rasco, Managing Director at STRAAT says: “While all 13 of our applications should face contention, we expect our fellow applicants will be equally motivated to focus their resources on operating the extensions, minimizing risk, and improving the underlying economics.”

New gTLD Domain Names

The company plans on leveraging its experience and proven methodology. The .CO management team has an existing platform all fired up and ready to go as far as branding and marketing goes with these exciting new gTLD’s.

STRAAT has decided to expand its existing relationship with Neustar, Inc. (NYSE: NSR) to serve as the back-end registry services provider/operator for all 13 new TLDs, as it has for .CO since 2010. Neustar’s proven experience and reliability will be paramount for the successful launch of these new extensions, says the company.

Nokta Domains continues to innovate aftermarket with domain name leasing

Posted: 12 Jun 2012 03:41 PM PDT

Nokta is one of the most innovative and successful companies in the domain space, as well as a one of the top 20 largest domain portfolio holders in the world. When we noticed that they were aggressively marketing their domains with the availability for lease, we decided to get in touch with them directly and get the inside scoop on what they were working on. Arif Sengoren, a Domain Sales Specialist with NoktaDomains.com provided us insights into the company’s latest developments and future plans.

Nokta Domains For Lease

The company currently has 100,000 names in their domain portfolio. NoktaDomains.com currently has well over 35,000 domains listed available for lease. Approximately 33,500 of them are English based keyword domains and the rest Turkish. Arif tells us that their catalog will increase during the 3rd and 4th quarter’s of 2012. Arif also mentioned that “we are open to any leasing offers for all of our domains. There is no reason to not to accept the offers to lease names.”

Indeed that seems to be the case, when you direct navigate (type-in) a domain owned by NoktaDomains.com, you will see a parked domain page load up, which has a bright orange bar drop down from the top which says “This premium domain name may be listed for sale or lease.” A screenshot of Politics.net, a domain name that is available for $250/month lease, and one of the better names available currently for lease at NoktaDomains.com, can be viewed below:

NoktaDomains.com

We asked what are some of the best domains available for lease currently at Nokta. Arif was happy to provide us with a short list of some of their premium names below, which he says have received lots of offers in the past.

  • CellPhoneTracking.com
  • CarsByOwner.com (We had a $30K)
  • CoffeeTable.co.uk (We sold plural version for $37.5K)
  • DomainCatch.com
  • PartyBusRental.com (We had a $25K offer)
  • Politics.net
  • SocialShop.com (We had a $25K offer)
  • WebHostingServices.com
  • BetPlace.com
  • Handtools.net
  • Listen.co.uk
  • Espadrilles.net

Lease Domain Names at NoktaDomains.com

Nokta also has a premium selection of Turkish based keyword domains in .com and .net available for lease:

  • OnlineBilet.com (Online Ticket)
  • UcakBileti.net (Airline Tickets, We sold the .com version of this keyword for $250K)
  • Komik.net (Funny)
  • Haberler.net (News)
  • Hediyeler.com (Gifts)
  • Emeklilik.com (Retirement)
  • Bahisler.com (Bets)
  • Oyuncak.net (Toy)
  • Pamuk.com (Cotton)
  • Cuzdan.com (Wallet)

Nokta has been leasing domains for approximately 7 month’s now. First, they started leasing their Turkish names in November of 2011, and then English based names 2 month’s ago. Many times interested and/or potential buyers of domains cannot afford to pay the high price tag on any one of Nokta’s domains, in one lump sum, so leasing a domain is the best alternative when the purchase price is above the buyer’s budget.

Domain Names For Lease

Nokta’s primary goal is to provide a win-win situation. Customers can start their projects immediately by leasing a premium domain from Nokta. By leasing the names that cannot be sold in the short run due to their high prices, Nokta is able to manage their portfolio more effectively. Arif went on to say: “Leasing is like a parking but the revenue model of leasing is stronger than parking. The parking revenues are diminishing and volatile. Therefore, we wanted to be the start-up in this new business model.”

Domain leasing — the next big thing?

Nokta has only been leasing their best domains for two months and already they have secured leases for around 100 domains.  The company feels that there is a great deal of growth in this option.  A year from now, it would be safe to assume that number could grow exponentially to 1,000, since Nokta has begun deploying an aggressive strategy toward leasing.

Curious to learn more about the actual domain leasing process, DNN asked the company what are the steps involved in securing a domain lease. Arif gave us the following summary of how things work below. He tells us that every effort was made to simplify the leasing process:

  1. Choose the domain you want from our extensive list viewable at http://www.noktadomains.com/leasedomain.html.
  2. View the lease form.
  3. Negotiations of the few details in the “details page box” can be done via e-mail.
  4. Once agreement is reached, the final agreement is provided via fax/email for signature.
  5. Signed documents can be faxed/emailed with the original sent via post or courier.
  6. You receive access to the domain name upon Nokta's receipt of the signed lease and payment of the deposit and initial lease payment.
  7. A copy of the signed agreement is returned to you for your records.
  8. Monthly/Yearly lease payments are accepted via Bank wire transfer, PayPal or credit card.

Domain Lease Agreement

Below are highlights from the summary of the domain leasing agreement:

  • Fixed Payments: You can determine the payment periods. You can pay monthly, quarterly or even yearly.  Payments increase annually.
  • 10% Discount for Advance Payments: If you pay annually in advance, you will get 10% discount.
  • Purchase Option & Price:  The Details page details if a purchase option is included and if so the purchase price.  You may exercise the purchase option any time during the term as noted in the agreement.  Depending on when you purchase, you will receive a credit towards the purchase price based on the lease payments you have made..
  • Deposit: There is a deposit requirement and the amount will be stated in the Details Page.   The purpose of the deposit is set out in the lease and is essentially our insurance policy.  If you terminate the lease agreement, the deposit will be refunded as per the agreement.
  • Control of the Domain: You have control over the domain via the name server designation and we will alter the designation as you request.  We will still own the domain and we are responsible for renewing it each year and dealing with the registrar.   We will place the domain under privacy WHOIS if requested.

Nokta is working closely with Paul Keating, Esq. Mr. Keating is a renowned domain name attorney and owns Law.es, a law firm with locations in Barcelona Spain and London UK.  Law.es provides legal services for domain name owners, registrars and other service providers in the domain space.

Arif tells us that Mr. Keating is  involved in preparing the leasing agreements and is constantly sharing his thoughts and opinions in order to improve NoktaDomains.com domain name leasing model/services.

Domain Name Lease

In addition to the recent introduction of domain leasing services, the company is making lots of new improvements to the NoktaDomains.com website. Domain sales have been strong so far this year for the company according to Arif, and they are aggressively marketing their ccTLD domain portfolios in the respective local markets; UK (.co.uk), South African (.co.za), Spanish (.es), and others.

Arif also informed DNN that they have finished their Domain Appraisal Project at the beginning of this year. They are currently deploying it in-house in order to determine the price of the domain names listed for sale on their marketplace. They are constantly tweaking and re-developing it to get more accurate results.

The company continues to actively acquire more domain names from the aftermarket to add to it’s portfolio. They use their own valuation tools in domain acquisitions. Some of the great names that were recently acquired by Nokta are SocialGames.com, RentalTrucks.com, Simcards.com, LanguageTools.com and BeachResort.com.

Yalcin Uysal is the Finance Manager of NoktaDomains.com. The company’s General Manager is Burcin Didinedin, who is also the co-founder of Nokta Internet Technologies and Nokta Media.

Nokta has a rich history and a bright future ahead

Nokta was founded and launched in Turkey in 2002 as Nokta Internet Technologies. It was later incorporated in North America in 2003 as Nokta.com, Inc. with 6 partners. The company specialized in direct navigation and domain name business and always focused on registering premium domain names. As a result, Nokta is today considered as one of the largest domain holding companies/portfolios in the world.

Arif tells us that the company got separated into two different companies in 2007: Nokta Media and Nokta Internet Technologies (NoktaDomains.com). NoktaDomains.com currently has 12 employees, responsible for all operations of the domain portfolio and serves customers from all over the world.

Nokta Media currently only serves the Turkish local market and it’s internet users. Arif told us that they have around 100 employees. Today, Nokta Media is one of the biggest internet companies in Turkey that reaches almost every Turkish user on a regular basis.

National Association of Realtors® wants .realestate, .home and .realtor new gTLDs

Posted: 12 Jun 2012 02:58 PM PDT

The National Association of Realtors® just announced that they have applied for 3 top level domains with ICANN. The NAR is North America’s largest trade association, and it represents over 1 million members involved in all aspects of the residential and commercial real estate industries. The NAR has been interested in getting it’s own new gTLD’s as early as 2005.

Through its wholly owned subsidiary, the Realtors® Information Network (RIN), the association has applied for the branded .realtor top-level domain (TLD) as an alternative to the familiar and commonly used .com, .net or .org. Applications have also been submitted for .realestate and .home, according to the press release.

.Realtor New Top Level Domain

NAR President Moe Veissi, broker-owner of Veissi & Associates Inc., in Miami Florida said:

“As the leading advocate for America’s home and property owners, NAR knows that every year a growing number of consumers turn to the Internet as a source of information, given the Internet’s convenience and round-the-clock accessibility. Our goal is to create a name space where home buyers, sellers and investors can go to find the most credible, trusted real estate resources and professional services.”

The National Association of Realtors® believes the new domain name will create a more positive experience for consumers who are seeking expert information and services and want to ensure they are working with a Realtor®. Only licensed real estate professionals — who are members of NAR and subscribe to a strict Code of Ethics — have the right to call themselves a Realtor®.

The top-level domain will also deliver additional branding and marketing value to Realtor® members and affiliates. Domains in the new extensions would be available for registration to Realtor® members; local and state Realtor® associations; association multiple listing services; affiliated institutes, societies and councils; and other NAR-approved licensees.

NAR has also entered into an exclusive marketing partnership with The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA), the exclusive licensees of the Realtor® mark in Canada. As a result of this arrangement, Realtor® members of CREA will also be able to use the domain, making .Realtor truly North American in scope.

The association has been following the pursuit of their very own gTLD’s since ICANN first considered introducing a new round of generic top-level domains in 2005. NAR has worked closely with Second Generation, an investment firm and registry operator for the top-level domain .jobs, throughout the application, review and development process.

Afilias to support over 300 applications in .city, .brand and .niche new gTLDs

Posted: 12 Jun 2012 12:11 PM PDT

Ireland based Afilias Limited has officially announced that the company will be bringing over 300 new top level domains to the internet. Currently Afilias is best known as the operator of the .INFO, .MOBI and .PRO top level domains (TLD) and a leading provider of registry technical services. The company’s technology will support 305 new gTLD’s, mostly brands, specific niches and geographical locations/cities. The company didn’t reveal the full list of which gTLD’s it is applying for or supporting, but tomorrow’s ICANN big reveal will publicize all of this information, at last.

Afilias New gTLD Domains

According to the press release, the applications span a range of new TLD ideas, and include 18 internationalized TLDs (Chinese and Cyrillic for example), 4 community focused domains, 4 geographic domains and more than 170 of individual brands and/or companies.

The remaining applications represent a wide variety of generic domain strings that are designed to simplify internet navigation by helping users discover focused, easily identifiable content. Although the list primarily contains the TLDs of its registry services customers, Afilias itself has applied for a range of strings in verticals as diverse as energy and media. Roland LaPlante, Senior Vice President and CMO at Afilias said:

“Afilias is helping a wide range of global entities apply for their TLD, including the .eco and .hotel teams as announced previously. The bulk of the Afilias-supported applications are from three of ICANN's five regions: North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. While these three regions will likely account for most of the overall applications to ICANN, Afilias applications have a bit more European focus due to the European base of our business.

In addition to technical support, several of these strings will leverage our complete Managed Registry Service, more fully capitalizing on Afilias' experience as an ICANN-Designated Registry Operator. We couldn't be more excited about the growth that all of these new domain names will bring to the Internet in the years ahead. We are looking forward to helping our customers get their TLDs approved and successfully launched, and also to bringing our own new domains to market.”

Afilias currently provides registry and DNS services for 17 top level domains and supports more than 20 million registrations, including almost 8 million .INFO domains and 1 million .MOBI domains registered worldwide. In addition, Afilias supports .ORG, .AERO, .ASIA, .PRO, XXX, .AG (Antigua and Barbuda), .BZ (Belize), .GI (Gibraltar), .HN (Honduras), .IN (India), .LC (St. Lucia), .ME (Montenegro), .MN (Mongolia), .SC (the Seychelles), .VC (St. Vincent and the Grenadines).

CIRA plans to implement French Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs)

Posted: 12 Jun 2012 07:51 AM PDT

Byron Holland, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Internet Registration Authority, has posted  an update on CIRA’s plans to introduce IDN domain names into the .CA space. The registry operator of the Canadian ccTLD plans to introduce the internationalized domain names sometime in January of 2013.

Canadian IDN Domain Names

According to Byron, below are some highlights of the planned approach to introduce the IDN’s:

French Characters: CIRA will allow the registration of the following characters: é, ë, ê, è, â, à, æ, ô, œ, ù, û, ü, ç, î, ï, and ÿ.

Administrative Bundling: Character variants will be bundled together, meaning that the Registrant of a particular domain name will have the exclusive right to register all of the variants of that domain name (e.g., only the Registrant of preside.ca will be able to register préside.ca, prèsïdë.ca, prësîdê.ca, etc.).

Single Registrar: Domain names in a bundle must all be held by the same Registrar under the same Registrant contact.

Pricing: The wholesale pricing of IDNs, including French character variants of existing domain names, will not be higher than the pricing for any ASCII or English domain name. This will not apply, however to any price related promotions that CIRA may choose to offer, from time to time.

Expansion of the Canadian domain space

According to CIRA’s website, over the past 7 months, the Canadian Internet Registration Authority has considered the proposed implementation of French characters (also known as Internationalized Domain Names, or IDNs) in .CA domains.  As part of this process, CIRA consulted extensively with subject matter experts, CIRA’s Certified Registrars and conducted two public consultations to obtain feedback on the proposed implementation of IDN’s.

CIRA received a tremendous amount of feedback, which has directly and demonstrably shaped the IDN implementation plans.  IDNs are currently scheduled to be made available in early January of 2013. Now that the IDN consultation is complete, CIRA has begun to develop the policies for the implementation of IDNs, and the technology required to implement this new offering.

The .CA ccTLD domain names are only available for registration in ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange), otherwise known as non-accented Latin-based script (a-z).  However, CIRA will be implementing  French Interntionalized Domain Names (IDNs) at the second level (to the left of the dot).

.CA Domain Names International

According to the IDN Consultation recently released by CIRA, their main objectives for the launch of IDNs are as follows:

  • To provide the opportunity to Registrants to register domain names correctly in French, one of Canada's two Official Languages
  • To continue to develop the .CA domain space as a key public resource for the social and economic development for all Canadians
  • For the IDN launch policies and procedures to reflect current world wide best practices
  • To ensure the policies and procedures of the launch be as consistent as possible with existing policies and procedures
  • For the policies and process not to be unduly complex
  • To reduce the potential for phishing and user confusion

As of this writing, there were 1,937,094 registered .CA domain names registered. The availability of IDN domains in the .CA space in the beginning of January 2013 is surely going to have an impact on new registrations, and will help further diversify the registry.

There is an interactive guide/roadmap that will help users better understand IDN’s and what’s to come.

International Trademark Association will host roundtable discussion on new domains

Posted: 12 Jun 2012 05:54 AM PDT

INTA will be hosting a free roundtable discussion on new gTLD’s in Munich next week. The main focus of the free seminar event will be legal rights objections for trademark owners. Brand owners and companies are encouraged to attend.

According to the International Trademark Association (INTA) more than 1,200 new gTLD applicants have registered with ICANN, submitting 2,000 new gTLD applications. Once ICANN reveals all the new gTLDs that have been applied for, there will be a temporary and nonrecurring objection period.

International Trademark Association New Domains

The legal rights objection period is expected to last approximately 7 months, starting in June 2012. The legal rights objection procedure may protect a trademark by denying any gTLDs that takes unfair advantage, unjustifiably impairs the distinctive character or creates confusion of a trademark.

WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) has been selected by ICANN to administer these dispute resolution procedures for all new gTLD strings. Erik Wilbers, the Director of the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center, will present this rights protection mechanism and will highlight at the event.

The roundtable discussion takes place on Thursday, June 21st, 2012 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM at the Sofitel Munich Bayerpost in Munich, Germany. Sebastian Ritze, Legal Manager at United Domains AG will be in charge of the introduction and moderation.

Registration is free, so if you have your afternoon open on that day, and you live in Germany, you don’t want to miss this event. Pr-registrations must be confirmed by Monday, June 18, 2012, at 2:00 pm UTC according to the INTA website. As of this writing, there were 46 confirmed attendees.

If you are wondering why Germany was selected to host this roundtable…? Well, probably because Germany has one of the largest and most active ccTLD aftermarket’s in the world. The .DE domain space has over 15 million registrations, and the German domain lifecycle has always been very active and locally oriented.

There are a handful of German based companies that are huge players in the global domaining world, such as Sedo and Key Systems. Neighboring Luxembourg is also a very popular corporate domain haven, for many domain businesses which choose to incorporate there, as well as domain industry investors from abroad who take advantage of the local intellectual property laws/regulations and tax benefits.

About The International Trademark Association

INTA is a not-for-profit membership association dedicated to the support and advancement of trademarks and related intellectual property as elements of fair and effective commerce.

The Association was founded in 1878 by 17 merchants and manufacturers who saw a need for an organization "to protect and promote the rights of trademark owners, to secure useful legislation and to give aid and encouragement to all efforts for the advancement and observance of trademark rights."

Today, 5,900 trademark owners, professionals and academics from more than 190 countries make INTA a powerful network of powerful brands. Members of INTA find true value in the Association's global trademark research, policy development, and education and training.

Headquartered in New York City, INTA also has offices in Shanghai, Brussels and Washington DC and representatives in Geneva and Mumbai.
