I miss y'all. Really, I do. (OK, most of you).

And it looks like we might get to see each other this year, at least those in the United States.

Internet Commerce Association (ICA) is hosting a meetup in Las Vegas in September to celebrate its 15th anniversary. It's open to all ICA members (you can join for $25 a month).

ICANN is also considering allowing in-person attendance at its planned meeting in Seattle this October. It is surveying previous attendees to see if they want to meet in person and what restrictions they are willing to put up with to make it happen. It would be the first in-person ICANN meeting since November 2019.

I'm not sure if I'll make it to Vegas, but if ICANN holds its in-person meeting in my backyard, I'll definitely be there.

Just forgive me if I don't want to shake hands just yet. I'll opt for the fist bump or elbow bump instead.

How many domain name companies will there be five years from now? At the rate we're going, not many.

No, I'm not talking about companies going out of business. I'm talking about consolidation.

Last month, GoDaddy Registry announced it is acquiring MMX's 28 strings along with .design and .club. GoDaddy Registry itself was created by acquiring Neustar's registry business last year.

It's just the latest acquisition in our industry and follows Donuts' acquisition of Afilias at the end of last year.

Consolidation is not a problem in and of itself. But it's important that we always have strong competitors in the business. This drives innovation and keeps costs down for consumers. It's important that we have many strong registrars, many registries, at least two good expired domain services, and at least two good marketplaces to choose from. It's also important that we support the new companies trying to shake up the industry.

GoDaddy's acquisition announcement was the most-read story on Domain Name Wire in April. Scroll down to find the other top stories and the podcasts I published last month.

Shots in arms. We're getting somewhere, but we still have a long way to go...unsurprisingly, NamesCon canceled its summer event in Budapest. And the June ICANN meeting will be virtual.

The domain name industry is international, which makes getting together during a pandemic more challenging.

But we're seeing progress. Green shoots, if you will. I can't wait to see you all in person again.
