How is the domain name business doing during the pandemic?

I've highlighted many stories over the past few months about domain name and website companies reaping the benefit of businesses going online during the pandemic. And, anecdotally, my aftermarket domain sales have been great.

But the proof is in the numbers and large datasets. And that's where things don't look so great. One dataset paints a dismal picture.

Escrow.com released data on Q2 domain transactions on its platform. Dollar volume for domains sank from $85.8 million in Q1 to $55.2 million in Q2. Ouch.

The company didn't release transaction volume, just dollar value. So it's possible that the business relies on a few significant transactions each quarter that were delayed

Still, we can't pretend that the domain name industry is immune from the current economic malaise.

June was a busy month for GoDaddy.

First, the company started redacting Whois information for all customers worldwide. This change could significantly impact its revenue, but it is trying to cross-sell another product to limit the losses.

Second, the company announced layoffs. While its business is doing fine during the Covid crisis, its outbound sales and do-it-for-me social media products are struggling. So it's reorganizing outbound sales into one office in Arizona and closing its offices in Austin and laying off hundreds.

I'll give credit to the company for offering very nice exit packages to its employees.

Some years define us, and 2020 is shaping up to be one of them.

2001 was one of those years for me. I lost my job at a tech company during the dot-com bust. Then terrorists flew planes into the twin towers. It was an anxiety-ridden year for many people.

2020 was bad enough with the pandemic. Now, unrest is sweeping across America.

Record unemployment. A deadly virus. Major cities setting curfews as people burn cars in the streets. It seems apocalyptic.

Yet, there is a certain solace people can find online. There is a different world out there that is more peaceful. It operates during a pandemic. It doesn't involve boarded-up shop windows. And as long as you avoid social media, it's an excellent place to escape to.

At the core of that escape are domain names and websites. Wix reported a surge of people creating websites starting in April. The domain business is one of the few bright spots in the economy right now.
