Facebook’s New Monetization Strategy – Best News for Domain Owners in Years?

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 10:10 AM PST

This is a guest post by Kevin Ohashi. Kevin is a 10 year veteran of the domain industry. He currently is working his startup, Review Signal, which transforms the opinions people share publicly on social media into a review site for consumers. It currently provides web hosting reviews and will review domain registrars soon.

I was reading Mark Cuban’s thoughts about Facebook trying to get him to pay to reach his fans. It’s an interesting opinion and one I can empathize with. The crux of it is this picture:

Brands have spent millions of dollars getting people to ‘Like’ their brands. Now, Facebook is asking them to pay more to reach the audience they already paid to build. It feels fundamentally unfair because Facebook has changed the rules of the game half way through.

Of course, there is another perspective to consider: the users. They probably don’t want every brand spamming them. There is some ambiguity to the word ‘Like’. Some would argue it’s not a laissez faire situation where brands are free to advertise to every user as much as they want. Facebook’s EdgeRank is supposed to improve the user’s experience by curating what users see in their feed (and it just so happens that more money greases the EdgeRank wheels).

That’s a quick synopsis of the article. Let’s get back on topic.

Why is this important to domainers?

Mark Cuban is advocating for brands to maintain more control over the way they communicate with their audience. He’s promoting Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram and MySpace (no joke!). It’s not mentioned in the article, but there is still only one place that the brand still maintains full control: their domain name(s).

I’ve argued in the past that domains are becoming less necessary as brands opt to use social networks for their primary web presence. Facebook has about one sixth of the world’s population as users. It’s easier to manage, easier to share content and easier to reach your audience (assuming you have money to spend).

This is a real kick back from brands. Maybe it’s just one guy. Maybe not. But it should be a good reminder that when you buy into these social networks, you’re potentially making a deal with the devil. They control the rules and you are beholden to them and the changes they decide to make in the future. Your relationship with your fans is moderated by someone else.

In the developer community we worry a lot about building our software on top of someone else’s platform. We’ve seen Twitter take out competitors it didn’t like and restricting their API to control what developers can do. Perhaps it’s reckoning time for brands. Maybe they will experience the risk they’ve put themselves at by investing into social media on platforms they don’t control and that don’t have an established business model.

Let me be clear: I don’t think this will stop brands from using social media. However, it may be the first of many tiny cuts in Facebook’s business model which moderates how it will deal with brands. Some brands may decide to try to control their fans’ experience more and invest in their own domains. At the margin, there may be some increased demand for domain names. Which is good news for domainers and the first good news I’ve seen in a while for the industry. I think the longer term outlook is still fairly grim for most of the industry, but end user demand is the only bright spot in my mind.

Sedo Email Offers Now Include Prices

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 09:34 AM PST

It’s not a major news story, but Sedo has finally decided to include the offer price in emails they send to domain owners . In the past, when Sedo emailed a domain owner about an offer that has been received, they did not send the offer price.  The email simply stated :

We are pleased to inform you that a potential buyer has made an offer for your domain, yourdomain.com
Please respond to this offer either by clicking on the following link or by going to “Offers received” in your Sedo account:  (LINK TO SEDO GOES HERE)
Please note, that you will receive reminder mails about this offer, until you respond.  You will need to submit at least one counter before you can cancel the negotiations.  This process was designed to ensure a communicative and successful market place.
Please note that the Seller assumes all responsibility for the listing of this domain name. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to, any obligations that arise from accepting an agreement to sell the domain name.

Best Regards,
Your Sedo Team

We noticed today that Sedo has finally changed the email to include the price.  The first sentence now reads

We are pleased to inform you that a potential buyer has made an offer of 60 USD for your domain

It’s a simple change and one that any domain owner who values their time will likely appreciate.  Godaddy Buyer Services please take note !   Sedo has still not responded to the complaints about lowball ($60) offers coming in from Godaddy, but at least they made this minor adjustment.  It’s been a long time coming.

Rapidomaine becomes Trusted Shop Certified

Posted: 08 Nov 2012 11:26 PM PST

The French domain registrar Rapidomaine.fr. announced today that they obtained the Trusted Shops Trustmark certification.

Trusted Shops, leading service provider for secure online shopping in Europe, announces the certification of the site rapidomaine.fr:  legal compliance and refund guarantee secured.

In order to join the circle of e-commerce sites that have been certified by Trusted Shops, Rapidomaine has had to undergo a legal audit based on more than 70 quality criteria. Key areas of inspection include respect of consumers' privacy, transparency in pricing and the conformity of the general terms and conditions with the law and the regulations of consumer associations.

"During the certification process, a legal expert guided us in rendering certain details of our site compliant. The legal audit revealed 14 criteria to be worked on out of fifty-six- that had already been fulfilled by our site," highlights Alexandre Badelon, managing director of Rapidomaine.

"This trustmark attests to the fact that our general terms and conditions of sale, our product information and our other legal documents are in compliance with the law, which was already generally the case, but above all it shows that these elements form a coherent whole and function together in the interests of the customer," he adds.

Collaborating with Trusted Shops and benefiting from its buyer protection allows online shops to offer their customers a secure environment.

"The Trusted Shops Trustmark is a display of trustworthiness that is indispensable for any e-commerce site that wants to show that it is reliable. Rapidomaine has fulfilled all of the quality criteria required to become certified. It is interesting to note that Rapidomaine is the first French domain name registrar and site host to be certified," explains David Chau, director for France at Trusted Shops.

Rapidomaine is a French domain name registrar that was founded in 2002. The company manages more than 2500 active customers, 7000 domain names and hosts 1500 sites. The company became part of the SedoMLS network in July 2012.

Trusted Shops was founded in 1999 and has accredited over 10,000 retailers. Trusted Shops offers a comprehensive service for the benefit of both – shop operator and consumer, which encompasses Customer Rating, Legal Compliance and Money-back guarantee. Their clients include major brands such as Microsoft Store, Sarenza and Zalando.

According to a survey by German eCommerce aggregator Schottenland.de in 2011, more than 60% of users pay attention to quality labels when shopping online. Do you recognize the Trusted Shops brand or other trust marks? Do you think it will help Rapidomain sell better?

After Sedo (FRA:SDO)’s CEO and co-founder, Tim Schumacher, left earlier this year, the company today announced changes to its executive team including the planned departure of three co-founders and the company's chief sales officer.

The transitions will take place during the first quarter of 2013, when Founders Ulrich Priesner, Marius Würzner and Ulrich Essmann along with Chief Sales Officer Liesbeth Mack-de Boer depart the company for the next steps in their careers.  Stepping up from within Sedo's ranks, Dirk Ochotzki will now serve as Head of Operations, Joel Ghebaly as Head of Product Management (Traffic Monetization), and Simonetta Batteiger as Head of Product Management (Trading).

I would like to thank the departing founders and management members for the last 12 years, in which Sedo has matured from a fast growing start-up to the world's largest domain marketplace with more than 140 employees serving our global customer base," comments Tobias Flaitz, CEO of the Sedo Holding AG. "With changing market requirements and increasing competition, Sedo enters the next stage in its growth with changes at the management level that will let the company continue to cater to today's client expectations."

With the next generation of leadership anchored by CEO Tobias Flaitz, Sedo continues to set the industry benchmark into its second decade by bringing to market innovative domain solutions that help companies and entrepreneurs capitalize on their online real estate potential, such as recently launching a suite of services to help launch promote and grow new gTLDs.

"By the nature of the domain business, Sedo has always been an evolving organization, and embracing change is part of the company's DNA," comments Ulrich Essmann, Co-founder and President of Sedo.com, LLC. "Today we are very proud to pass on management responsibility to longtime team members who will enable Sedo to capitalize on its tremendous growth opportunity and bright future."
