Recapping January in the domain biz

It was great seeing many of you at NamesCon last week. About a thousand people registered for this year's event and a whopping 40% of registrants attended for the first time. That's a surprisingly high number.

Overall, there was a bit more enthusiasm in the air compared to a year ago. I can't nail down exactly what it is, but overall I think domainers had a good 2018 and are projecting that forward.

NamesCon organizers announced that next year's event will be in Austin. It's a bit ironic for me since I'm getting ready to move from Austin after over two decades here.

Moving the conference out of Vegas is a risk, but I understand why the conference thinks it's time to shake things up. I'm excited for NamesCon 2020.

One final thing before we recap last month's top stories and podcasts...I have only a couple of ad spots open right now on DNW. Reach out if you'd like to learn more.

Now let's review the top stories on DNW last month, as ranked by pageviews:

1. A domain name lesson on CNBC's The Profit - Marcus Lemonis helped a toy shop upgrade from .net to .com as part of his investment.

2. Great domain investing data from Paul Nicks (GoDaddy) at NamesCon - Paul Nicks digs into domain investment approaches and returns.

3. Prince's estate settles Prince.com fight with Domain Capital - It looks like Prince's estate will get Prince.com in return for cash.

4. "Domain Name" is a pay-to-play search term on Google - There are no organic results (other than Wikipedia) above the fold.

5. How a Whois check could have halted a scam - a Wendi Deng Murdoch imposter tricked some photographers and a clue was in Whois.

Let's kick off 2019!

The domain name industry holds its big annual conference this month in Las Vegas. NamesCon is always a good event to catch up and get business done.

If you are attending and would like to meet, please reply to this email and we will set something up.

Over the past couple of weeks, I've been writing about the top stories of 2018. These include GDPR, free speech questionscompany acquisitions, the new Cooperative Agreement for .comrecord prices for new TLD sales, and the success of .App

You can get a quick download on these topics by listening to my New Year's Eve podcast. Next week's podcast is the annual predictions episode, so stay tuned for that!

Speaking of podcasts, be sure to check out my December 24 podcast with Bill Sweetman. He has a warning for everyone in the domain business.

Now, as we do every month, let's review the top stories on DNW last month, as ranked by pageviews:

1. NBC registers domain names for sports betting - is NBC getting ready for sports betting or were these domain registrations just defensive?

2. Marriott's poor choice of domain for email notification - Email-Marriott.com looks like a phishing email to many people.

3. GMO is sending expired domains to GoDaddy Auctions - GoDaddy picked up another top 10 registrar. I wonder if Enom will transition in 2018 now that Tucows sold off its share of NameJet to Web.com.

4. GoDaddy tests new branding on Afternic landers - The GoDaddy logo is front and center.

5. Four ways to improve the GoDaddy aftermarket - GoDaddy has the dominant domain name aftermarket. It could be better.

And here are the DNW podcasts from December

#213 - Understanding .Brand domains

#214 - Domain predictions – who was right?

#215 - 7 reasons companies need a great domain

#216 - The Fake Domain Broker

Here are a few thoughts as we round out the year, as well as the top stories on DNW last month.

NamesCon, the must-attend event for people in the domain name industry, takes place next month in Las Vegas. The event will be in its final year at the Tropicana Hotel from January 27-30. It will move to a different venue in 2020.

A quick tip: starting the past couple of years, the conference has shifted so that more content is on Sunday. It basically starts Sunday morning and ends Wednesday morning rather than starting Monday and ending Thursday. Keep that in mind when you book your travel.

Also, congratulations to Jon Nevett, who was just named the CEO of .org operator Public Interest Registry. This seems like a great fit. Nevett co-founded Donuts.

One other note: if you work for a domain name, security, marketing or other business, let's talk about how we can work together in 2019, whether that's advertising or something else. Just respond to this email and we'll set up a call.

Now, getting to the news from last month. The top stories on DNW were mostly about Verisign and .com price hikes. Be sure to check out last month's podcasts as well. I'm getting lots of great feedback from the interview with Mark Levine.

Here are the top stories on DNW last month, as ranked by pageviews:

1. Who wins, who loses from Trump Admin decision on domain names - I reviewed the winners and losers from the decision to let Verisign increase prices on .com domain names.

2. Holy sh!t…Verisign just called out "Domain Scalpers" and its biggest customers - Just a day after getting U.S. approval to raise prices, Verisign threw domain investors under the bus. It was a shocking move.

3. U.S. Gov Grants Verisign .Com Price Hikes - If you don't know the background for the first two stories, read this one.

4. Pennsylvania Attorney General subpoenas Epik over Gab.com domain name - Epik decided to accept Gab.com at its registrar and was repaid with a subpoena.

5. Domains suggest which cities might get XFL football teams - Domain names tipped off which cities were in the running for football teams.

And here are the DNW podcasts from October

#209 - Going Global with Rolf Larsen

#210 - Brewing up Brew.com

#211 - 48 domains, $114k sales on $3400 investment

#212 - All about naming with Eli Altman
