    Thanks, China!

Few would have predicted that the big story this year was going to be China, especially once the Chinese stock markets crashed. Surprisingly, the crash marked the beginning of one of the biggest and fastest booms we've ever experienced in the domain name industry.

Chinese domain name investors have pumped tens of millions of dollars into the industry this year. A rising tide lifts all boats, but not all boats are rising equally.

Here are some of the winners this year:

Domain name marketplaces including Sedo, Afternic and NameJet are cashing by in brokering sales of two, three and four letter .com domain names, plus numeric domains. Sales at Sedo have spiked in the past couple months, with volume up hundreds of domains per week compared to earlier this year. NameJet continues to set records

Domain name registrars have also profited as Chinese have registered millions of domain names that were previously viewed as almost worthless. However, this money has mostly flowed to Chinese domain name registrars rather than the big, U.S. registrars.

Registry Verisign is a clear winner, easily topping its predicted Q4 domain base numbers. But new TLD registries have also cashed in. .XYZ and .Club, which have done a good job targeting the Chinese market, come to mind.

I'm sure this has also made it a good year for the China consulting firm Allegravita.

Some domain name investors will have plenty under the Christmas tree this year, too. Three-letter domain name owners can easily sell domains for $50k or more that would have barely grabbed $10k a few years ago. This money is flowing to other parts of the industry as they spend cash on new domain names.

Is this all a bubble waiting to burst? What will happen in 2016? Stay tuned to Domain Name Wire to find out.

    November's Top Stories

In a roundabout way, China accounted for 3 of the top 5 stories on Domain Name Wire last month. This makes sense given that the unprecedented runup in prices for short and numeric domain names is driving the domain name business.

    1. Be careful of domain name pumping - People with ulterior motives are pumping the prices of certain domain names. Be careful.

    2. Booking.com buys .Hotels top level domain name for $2.2 million - Booking.com won a unique auction for the .hotels top level domain name.

    3. What domain names eBay, Mastercard and 22 others bought this week - Big companies pick up domain names at Sedo.

    4. When the bubble bursts... - Are there fundamentals driving the surge in short domain name pricing? Or is it a typical bubble?

    5. Verisign issues statement on Chinese market for domain names - Verisign issues a statement to investors after .com and .net registrations surge past forecasts.

    October's Top Stories

With the clocks set back in the United States, cooler weather arriving and leaves changing colors, it's a sure sign we're headed into the busy time of year.

Here's a look back at the top stories on Domain Name Wire from last month.

    1. The Adam Dicker Saga
    - One of the bigger personalities in the domain name industry had his comeuppance last month. Many of Adam Dicker's revenue and prowess claims were called into question, people said they were ripped off by him, and apparently he was running low on money. A lawyer acting on behalf of Dicker sent a letter to people who posted things on a massive NamePros thread, asking them to remove the comments. This one isn't over yet.

    2. A Massive Malware/Phishing Attack - If you own a domain name, odds are you received an email over the past week telling you it had been suspended. The sender wants you to click a link to download...malware.

    3. Judge sides with .XYZ - A U.S. District Judge granted XYZ's motion for summary judgment, dealing a blow to Verisign. Verisign had sued XYZ over false advertising claims.

    4. Amazon AWS Crystal Ball - Domain Name Wire scooped Amazon.com's product names for new AWS services.

    5. Cambridge is not so scholarly. University of Cambridge lost a UDRP for Cambridge.com, then withdrew a trademark challenge against the domain name owner.

    August's Top Stories

Back to school, cooler weather and domain name conference season...

But before that, August was a news-making month for the domain name industry, in particular the .xyz domain name.

I wrote multiple stories on some of the hotter topics, so I've grouped these together on the list.

    1. Google is now part of Alphabet, uses ABC.xyz. This surprise announcement lifted awareness of all new top level domains.

    2. Verisign v. XYZ - It was a busy month for the false advertising case Verisign brought against .XYZ. Verisign is asking for documents from a number of third parties about its conversations with .XYZ and Daniel Negari. Donuts said Verisign is trying to intimidate and bully competitors. And based on exhibit lists, Verisign seems to be zeroing in on .XYZ's deal with domain name registrar Network Solutions.

    3. Paul Graham: Change your name. Get the .Com - Y Combinator co-founder explains why you need a good name and the matching .com domain name.

    4. Google Domains screw-up divulges 1,664 customers' email addresses - someone on the Google Domains team forgot to bcc: an email, sending it to 1,664 Google Domains customers. Oops. On the positive side, there was none of the usual "reply all" complaining.

    5. .Online domain name registrations by the numbers - a look at the makeup of .Online's record-breaking launch.

    July's Top Stories

The top stories on Domain Name Wire in June were about lawsuits. Not much changed in July, as lawsuits and UDRPs took center stage. Thankfully, ParkingCrew made an acquisition to break up the monotony.

Here's a look back at the past month in the domain name business.

    1. Something .Com lawsuit - company demands domain name over copyright and trademark claims.

    2. Work Better Updates - I wrote several posts about the WorkBetter.com cybersquatting lawsuit last month that made the top charts. The owner fought back against the lawsuit and the plaintiff withdrew the suit. Here's why. I also have a first person account of the case in this podcast.

    3. $50,000 penalty for filing frivolous UDRP - Nat Cohen scored a nice settlement after a company filed a UDRP against his three letter domain name.

    4. ParkingCrew acquires NameDrive - Consolidation in the domain name parking space continues.

    5. WordPress wins another round against Chris Pearson - the Thesis saga continues as WordPress keeps Thesis.com domain name.
