There's a lot to talk about in Vancouver.

The ICANN GDD Industry Summit is taking place outside of Vancouver, British Columbia May 14-17.

Registries and registrars have a lot to discuss with the GDPR implementation deadline approaching later this month. That's part of the reason I'm attending. I want to get a read on what registrars, registries and marketplaces are going to do.

For example, will domain transfers work after the GDPR deadline? Maybe. Tucows, the second largest domain name registrar, recently announced that it's going to change its domain transfer process so that it works even if it doesn't get access to Whois records.

I understand why, but if other registrars don't change their policies then we could see an increase in domain theft.

Please reply to this message if you are attending the event and would like to schedule a meeting with me.

Now let's review the top stories on DNW from last month:

1. GoDaddy is closing an expired domain "loophole" - Backorders placed after auctions close will no longer win the domain name.

2. Whois GDPR carnage continues: Afilias to ditch almost all data in Whois on millions of domains - Afilias announced its Whois plans but backtracked shortly thereafter.

3. Vacation.rentals domain name sells for record $500,300. Oh, and it's ranking on the first page of Google now for "Vacation Rentals". Listen to the DNW podcast with the buyer.

4. U.S. government asks ICANN to investigate GoDaddy's Whois policy - Don't mind the elephant in the room.

5. Original France.com owner sues to recover domain from the country - Yes, every publication in the world wrote about it...but it was on DNW first.

The GDPR failure

As I write this newsletter, Afilias has just announced that it will essentially make its Whois service go dark next month when the General Data Protection Regulation kicks in.

It's easy to blame Afilias for nuking Whois. But I'd probably do the same thing if I were in its shoes. With the threat of big fines in Europe and ICANN saying it won't enforce its contractual requirements for Whois, Afilias took the safe bet.

The chorus of groups yelling about Whois will grow significantly next month, especially when registrars and registries start pulling the plug on Whois data. A lot of people use Whois to thwart bad guys.

As Tim Chen, CEO of DomainTools, explained to me on the podcast this week, the real-life implications of no Whois will hit home when your inbox is suddenly inundated with spam.

Here are some of the ways that a Whois blackout will affect me personally:

1. It will be harder, if not impossible, to do my end user reports.
2. I won't be able to verify who owns a domain before buying it.
3. It will be difficult to trace stolen domain names.
4. I won't be able to connect the dots on fraud investigations.
5. It will be difficult for potential domain buyers to contact me directly.
6. I won't be able to call people to inquire about selling their domains.

Those are a half dozen problems that come to mind in less than a minute.

At this point, companies like Afilias are smart to be conservative. The only thing I can see swinging the pendulum is if the U.S. government passes legislation mandating public Whois. That's not far-fetched.

Enough about GDPR, at least for this minute. Let's review the top stories on DNW last month:

1. Take a look at The Church of Scientology's domain names - The controversial organization owns thousands of defensive domain names, plus some used to attack critics.

2. Another example of why your company must be the registrant of its domain names - A Canadian airline says that a contractor is holding its domain names hostage.

3. Name.com expired domains are now on GoDaddy - The registrar agreed to partner with GoDaddy for expired domains as part of its parent company's deal to sell its domain portfolio to GoDaddy.

4. Star.org sells for $225,000 at Sedo - It is the third largest public .org sale of all time.

5. 17 end user domain name sales up to $500,000 - A three letter domain sold for a half of a million dollars. Does anyone want to buy DNW.com?

A bit of optimism

I felt a sense of relief as the calendar flipped to March this morning. It seems like it was brutal winter in a number of ways.

It was almost like the apocalypse here in Austin when kids got two days off of school due to "winter weather". (Our definition here is a bit different than elsewhere.)

Then there was the sickness. Even if you didn't catch the flu, you were certainly washing your hands like mad and avoiding everyone else.

So it feels good to be turning the corner. The clocks change in a couple weeks. The ground is thawing. Plants are in bloom.

There are also things to be optimistic about in the domain name business. While it's still not the go-go days of the past, I'm seeing some "green shoots" in the market. Some big sales and companies innovating.

Consider the second most popular story on DNW last month. GoDaddy tweaked its "for sale" messages in the purchase path and increased aftermarket domain sales through domain search by nearly a third.

I think there's a lot more low hanging fruit like this. So much more about the domain sales process can be optimized with stellar results.

Consider this a nudge to domain name companies to continuously test. And if you have a test that has big results, be sure to let me know.

OK, on to the top five stories on DNW last month, as ranked by pageviews:

1. WIPO panel screws Domaining.com owner Francois Carrillo out of Ado.com - Thankfully, he's not done fighting.

2. GoDaddy "for sale" tweak leads to 41% more aftermarket sales revenue - New "For Sale" messages are drastically increasing sales of aftermarket domain names.

3. Google is upping the ante on SSL - The Chrome browser will begin showing "not secure" on non-SSL sites, even those without forms.

4. Back from NamesCon — here's my take. It was a good conference. If you missed it, here's a great summary of the keynotes.

5. Analyzing startup domain names - Most of the startups selected for MassChallenge's inaugural Texas class use .com, but not all of them.

If you missed any podcasts last month, now is a great time to get caught up:
